I was just reading an article about that self driving Audi at CES and it got me thinking about self driving cars. At first the idea of self driving cars made me think "OH NO THEY ARE TRYING TO TAKE MY NATURAL BORN MURICAN RIGHT TO DRIVE ALL THE THINGS". But seeing a car like that where you can choose to turn the self driving on/off and it would otherwise be a normal car sounds very interesting to me. Something that really sparked my interest in this is my recent introduction to cruise control. During my first 6 years of driving, I never had any cruise control in my automatic base model Honda. Now in my manual Miata, I have cruise control and using it makes me feel like I am in a "self-driving" car. Sure, I understand that a real self-driving car will do all the steering and braking and such too, but maybe that wouldn't be so bad. If I could somehow still have a manually shifted transmission, I would gladly be okay with a car that could drive itself when I want it to. My point is that I am much more accepting of this future self-driving technology than I originally though. And the main inspiration for this is just getting to use basic cruise control. WE ARE LIVING IN THE FUTURE!

Oh ok. I've never owned a car with modern conveniences like power windows, cruise control, or abs. I am like you scared of the self driving future. As long as I am allowed to drive myself then there is nothing to fear, but if we get banned from self driving places...that would suck.

Oh of course, I would rather die than give up being able to drive at all lol. It is certainly a necessity for me that self-driving be an "option" that can be turned off like traction control.

IMO this shit needs to stop. The traffic and safety Gestapo will mandate that humans are not fit to drive. After that judgement day isn't to far away.

Here's a good case in favor of the self driving car, from a Tesla owner

As much as I agree, I can't help but feel like a luddite for entirely resisting the technology. Sure enough, humans will eventually be deemed not fit to drive. But I don't forsee that happening in this lifetime. If I am wrong, well I surely hope there is some "outlaw" country out there that I can hoon until I die!
